Assaults and Dealing with Possibly Mentally Disabled Persons
ABIS Security Investigations Truth Verification, Risk Services & Investigations would suggest the following tactic if you are confronted with persons who appear to be deranged, mentally challenged, unstable, aggressive panhandlers, or abusing substances. Do not be aggressive in response. Make eye contact and use a calm, but firm voice to reply no to solicitations for money or other such requests. Make no sudden movements or hand gestures.
Use open hands, palm up and arms spread shoulder width apart (this action denotes “no harm”).
