  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Have keys ready when approaching vehicles.
  • Inspect vehicle before entering for signs of break-in, tampering, or persons inside the vehicle.
  • Ensure the vehicle is routinely serviced and maintained.
  • In high crime areas, do not carry credit cards and bring only the cash you will need.
  • Make sure you have a cell phone and utilize 911 for emergency calling in case of trouble.
  • Keep vehicle doors locked.
  • Pre – plan your route of travel.
  • Do not stop to assist stranded motorists, but call in safely from your cell phone.
  • Drive to the nearest police or fire station if being followed, etc. If rear-ended by another vehicle, pull • over in a public place to exchange information.
  • If your vehicle breaks down, use your cell phone to call for assistance.
  • Blow your horn if someone suspicious approaches your vehicle at a stop sign or traffic light.
  • Do not pull over for flashing headlights. An emergency or police vehicle will be equipped with red and blue flashing lights.
  • If you become lost, find a public place such as a gas station or other well-lit public area to ask for directions or call for assistance.
  • Use automatic teller machines only in bank or hotel lobbies, or drive-up units, and only during business hours in safe sections of town.
  • Use steering wheel locking devices (such as those called “the Club”).
